Governor Profiles

Karen Stevenson - Chair of Governors

Co-opted Governor, Chair of Governors
Term of Office: 01/09/17 - 31/08/21

I am a mother of four, all of whom have attended Uplands and have been able to achieve their individual goals. I have been a governor at Uplands for over ten years and I have been both the Chair of Governors and the Safeguarding Governor for the last three years.

In a previous life before children, I was working in investment banking, but since then I have done a variety of volunteering roles and I am now working at Crowborough Memorial Hospital as a bank admin staff.

In addition to Uplands, I am currently the Chair of Governors at a primary school in Tunbridge Wells, as well as a director of Tunbridge Wells Primary School Collaborative Trust, whose members consist of eighteen local schools working together to provide excellent education for the children in those schools.

I passionately believe that good education should be accessible for all children, irrespective of their ability and background and this is why I continue to volunteer in this rewarding role as a School Governor.

Roger Lockwood

Co-opted Governor, Vice Chair Governors
Term of Office: 01/09/2017 - 31/08/2021

I have lived in Wadhurst for over 30 years and am now retired from a career in Finance. Our three boys all went through the Primary School to Uplands. They all achieved their aims and are now enjoying their young families and professions. I wanted to be a governor as I had been so impressed with the level of care, encouragement and quality of teaching extended to them.

I have been a governor at Uplands for almost fifteen years and serve on all the sub-committees, chairing the Staffing, Finance & General Purposes Committee and acting as the Vice-Chair for the Full Governing Body.

Roger Salwey

Parent Governor
Term of Office: 28/05/15 - 27/05/19

I am father to two former students at Uplands and was elected as an Uplands' Parent Governor in 2015. I have enjoyed being a primary school governor at Mayfield CE Primary since 2004 and became Chair of Governors in 2008. Most of my career has been in youth travel - school expeditions and gap years. Before that, I served in the Regular Army and then worked in Finance. I play baritone horn in the Mayfield Silver Band and sing in three local choirs.

Jason Scott-Taggart

Parent Governor

Term of Office: 28/03/2018 - 27/03/2022

I am a father of three, with two attending Uplands for some time and the third following soon.  We have lived in Mayfield for 13 years after moving from London.  I work in The City as an IT Manager in Financial Services and have been a governor of an inner London primary school.  I am passionate about comprehensive education and was keen to serve as a governor to support the progressive approach of the College.  I enjoy photography, technology, am an active parent at Heathfield & Waldron Rugby Club and Chair the charity IT4Homeless.

Patricia Smith

Co-opted Governor

Term of office: 02/11/2016 - 01/11/2020

I am a Chartered Engineer and I am currently working as a Senior Project Engineer in the Oil and Gas Sector in London. I have lived in Wadhurst for over 15 years with my husband Mick and I am a member of Uplands Gym and a member of the Wadhurst Running Club. I set up and ran a successful book club in the village for a number of years. I am currently studying Astronomy via distance learning at the University of Central Lancaster.

Lucy Stephen

Co-opted Governor
Term of Office: 05/12/2018 – 05/12/2022

I have been a co-opted governor since January 2015.

I began my teaching career in inner city Nottingham in 2002 then moved to teach Geography at Uplands in 2004. I became head of Geography at Uplands in 2005. In 2010, having returned to Uplands following a year teaching in New Zealand, I became SENCO. In 2015 I took up the post of Director of Learning Support at Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre, Tenterden.

I am particularly interested in developing pedagogical practices and innovative approaches to inclusive teaching and learning experiences. Additionally, I am keen to encourage the development of reflective practitioners and links to researched based practices. I am pleased to have this opportunity to continue to contribute to the Uplands learning community which has played a formative role in my teaching career.

Graham Wells

Co-opted Governor, Chair of the Community Services Committee
Term of Office: 01/09/2018 - 31/08/2022

I am a co-opted governor and currently chairman of the Community Services Committee. I retired as Vice Principal of Uplands in 2007 and was delighted to continue my long association with the College as a governor. All of my three children attended Uplands and subsequently went on to University. I also continue my link with Uplands as a regular user of the Sports Centre fitness gym.

Locally, I am a Wealden District Councillor for Wadhurst and am co-opted onto Wadhurst Parish Council. Clearly I cannot get enough of education and schools as I am also a governor of Wadhurst CE Primary School!

Claire Berry

Co-opted Governor
Term of Office: 02/12/2015 – 01/12/2019

Although I do not live in Wadhurst, my role as Director of Human Resources for the Nikwax Group brings me into contact with many local people and businesses. I have had quite an eclectic career, previously working in both the oil and the not-for profit sectors. I have qualifications in business and management, including a Masters of Business Administration from The Open University.

I have two school aged children.

Eleanor Wilkes

Co-opted governor

Term of office: 10/7/18 – 09/7/22

I work within Human Resources to provide strategic and operational advice to a group of schools in London and the South East. I have lived locally for the past four years and have a son who is currently at Uplands and two daughters who will follow him in future years.

David Sumner

Staff Governor

Term of office: 01/11/16 to 31/10/20

As a teacher of geography at Uplands, I am well placed to serve on the Student Development Committee.  Since I have also run the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and support most of the local events with my own two little monsters, who are primary school age, it made sense to be on the Community Committee as well.   In addition to being a press photographer, close protection officer and Special Police Constable, my primary background was in security and engineering management, focusing on development, stakeholder requirements and training managers to become effective teams.  Outside of school, I now volunteer with the Southborough Scout troop.
