Sixth Form Fundraising
Head Girl Rachel Ramsey writes ‘Charity work is something that we find very important in Sixth Form life. We take every opportunity to raise money for a selection of charities and this year has been no exception. Our first charity event was the Macmillan coffee morning on 30th September - everyone in the Sixth Form contributed to the baking and selling of cakes and due to the generosity of all our students, we raised a grand total of £206.48 in just 20 minutes! In November, for Children In Need, the Sixth Form gathered at Wadhurst station at 6 am in fancy dress to greet all the tired commuters. A great effort was put in by everyone in the Sixth Form and by the end of the day, after much running around the school collecting donations, the current Sixth Form broke all previous records set for fundraising events and raised an amazing £800! Thank you to all Sixth Formers who have contributed to our fundraising this year - there are many more events to come!’

Tuesday 15 November 2011
6 to 8 pm
This will launch our ‘Information, Advice and Guidance’ period for students thinking about Sixth Form options at Uplands. Our Sixth Form Information Booklet detailing our Sixth Form provision for next year will be available to collect.
Between 6 and 7 pm there will be displays by staff about the subjects they will be offering in the Sixth Form next year. They will be able to answer specific questions about these subjects and there will also be some current Sixth Form students on hand to offer their perspectives on life in Uplands Sixth Form. Mr S. Smith our Head of Sixth Form will give a presentation from 7.15 pm in the Main Hall about Uplands Sixth Form provision and the processes and issues involved between now and next September.
‘Safe Drive Stay Alive’ Presentation
We would like to do all we can to raise student awareness of the dangers linked to driving before they pass their tests; to help with this, the emergency services will be giving a presentation to Sixth Form students at 2 pm on Monday 5 December as part of their ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive’ campaign. The presentation explores the consequences of getting involved in a road crash using a DVD reconstruction and live testimonies from emergency services staff and survivors of road traffic collisions. The show emphasises the dangers inexperienced young drivers may encounter such as excessive speed, using mobile phones, drinking/drug use, not wearing seatbelts and peer pressure. The presentation by the emergency services (including Police/Fire/Ambulance) will be made to the whole Sixth Form in an assembly-style format finishing at approximately 3.25 pm.

Operation Quality Street
A group of Sixth Formers with other members of the local community supported Sussex Police in the Quality Street project where the main focus was improving community areas of Wadhurst. There efforts were recognised by the Parish Council, Police and the local press.
(Rachel Ramsay writes)
As a group of keen Sixth Form students from Uplands Community College, we met at Wadhurst Cricket Pavilion, ready for a day of hard work! Anti-graffiti paint, supplied by Trade Paints, was applied to the Pavilion, by Gabby Baldock, Sam Brickell, Sasha Jones and Rachel Ramsay, to hopefully improve the state of the Pavilion. Benches were sanded and painted by crafty young men, Ben McQueen, Sam Wallace, James Evans and Robbie Bramall, using paints donated by Wadhurst Ironmongers and after a long morning working, One Stop and Fazan Court kindly provided refreshments for the students involved. After tea and biscuits, Fred Harrington, Jack Kent and Grant Rabson went back to the gardening planting roses and lavender which were helpfully donated by Pashley Manor Gardens and the English Heritage Gardens, who also provided equipment for the jobs plus 6 hours of labour. Gabby Baldock and I, along with the help of Sussex Police, painted the football dug-outs and fencing was put up around the perimeter of the football pitch, by Ben McQueen and Grant Rabson, Tate Fencing donated the fencing, which has definitely improved the appearance of the field. A big ‘thank you’ must go to Wadhurst Neighbourhood Watch – Tim Page – for his labour and help given to the students and also to Wealden District Council for removing graffiti, clearing rubbish and cutting hedges. Without them, all this work would not have been possible. We were also lucky enough to have the event captured by our Sixth Form photography student, Alex Lond, pictures will be on display in the Sixth Form Centre. Our main aim of today was to show the community that Uplands Sixth Form wish to be involved with all community events and it was great to meet the people of Wadhurst and to show them that we are concerned with the well-being of our village. We all hope that our hard work will be maintained and that the people of Wadhurst and surrounding areas will enjoy spending time in the newly refurbished area. Thanks again to Sussex Police and the village community for organising such a successful event.

Developing a Coaching Culture in the sixth form at Uplands
We turned up not knowing much about the course or what it offered us; we thought it might be slightly boring and underestimated its importance. As a group, we discussed and learnt not only the differences between mentoring and coaching but the effects coaching can have on individual’s life. Once we had covered the basics, we split into triads and put our newly learnt skills into practise. From this short activity we gained a huge insight into furthering social skills and the importance that coaching can hold within society. We discovered a skill that none of us really knew existed and through a challenging morning, we all feel we have greatly benefited.
Some reflections from the sixth form participants:
Coaching gives a helpful insight into how we can help ourselves, our friends and other students. It can be applied all round to every aspect of life.
I would recommend it for anyone.
The coaching has helped with skills not only for use in Uplands but in life to overcome problems that may arise.
It was a great experience and I would recommend it.
Coaching is key to unloading a person’s potential by finding that hidden quality, they can benefit hugely. The coaching session we have done has offered every one of us an aspect of achievement by developing alternate communication skills.
Coaching would be very useful for student’s communication all throughout the school. It would useful for the older students to be able to help the younger students learn.
