PTA Race Night - 24th March

Night at the Races

The PTA would like to say a huge THANK YOU! to everyone who came along to the Xmas fair last term. Thanks to all your support we managed to raise over £3,300!!

This is a really fantastic amount, especially in these hard times and it is very rewarding to know that any event we organise is so well supported by students and their parents.

The money raised at the fair will go towards buying new IT equipment needed by the languages department. All students will benefit from replacing the old computers with up to date, 21st century, equipment to raise achievement and support exciting learning.

These days, schools really struggle to fund purchases such as this so the work of the PTA is becoming more and more vital. Any support you can give us would be very gratefully received. Please come along to a meeting and find out what you can do to help, whether it’s selling raffle tickets, running a stall at the summer fair or helping behind the bar at an evening event.

The next fund raising event will be the race night on 24 March. Tickets will be on sale from Student Services shortly at £10 each, which will include a meal. There will be a fully licensed bar. Come along and have a bet on the races. If you can’t make it (or even if you can!), there will also be the chance to sponsor a race or “buy” a horse. All owners of winning horses will get a prize!

We hope to see as many of you as possible on the night and thank you all once again for all your support.

Languages Careers Day - 9th January 2012

The Languages Careers Day is to be held on Monday 9th January 2012. The Languages Department still have opportunites for people to run workshops where our Year 9 students can experience real-life workplace situations involving languages. All languages are welcome; indeed our students have previously enjoyed learning Japanese, Chinese and Turkish.

Innovation in Learning Day

Uplands Community College will be giving students the opportunity to develop learning experiences while being taken off timetable on 9 December 2011. Sixth Form students will be given a number of choices when deciding how they would prefer to spend the day. Please see the letter for more information.

Christmas Concert

The Christmas Concert is being held on Monday 12th December at 7.30pm. Years 7 to 13 are performing a wide range of music and the PTA will be selling refreshments. Hoping to raise money for the refurbishment of the computers in the music department. Tickets are available from Student Services or on the evening at the door, £4 for adults, £2 for students or OAP’s.

HAC Open Evening - Tuesday 17th May

Sixth Form Information Evening - Tuesday 25 January

This will launch our ‘Information, Advice and Guidance’ period for Year 11 students about Sixth Form options at Uplands. There will be displays by subject staff about the subjects they will be offering in the Sixth Form next year. They will be able to answer specific questions about these subjects and there will also be some current Sixth Form students on hand to offer their perspectives on life in Uplands Sixth Form. There will then be a presentation about Uplands Sixth Form provision and the processes and issues involved between now and next September.

Languages Careers Day, Thursday 6th January

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Our very successful Languages Careers Day has been running for three years.

We are looking for people to run workshops where students can experience real-life workplace situations involving languages. All languages are welcome; indeed our students have previously enjoyed learning Japanese and Chinese.

We also hold a Languages Forum on the same day in which students circulate and ask participants how languages are used in the workplace.

FILMCLUB On The Road comes to Uplands

FILMCLUB On The Road

FILMCLUB On the Road brings the "cinema experience" to your school.
We are lucky enough to have the FILMCLUB team visiting Uplands on 18th May.
On the day they will set up the club room, screen a film, capture reviews and give inspirational talks on the power of film.

What will FCOTR bring with them?
State of the art projector, large screen, beanbags, sound equipment, laptops (to capture audience reviews) and a big bag of popcorn.

What film will we watch?
FCOTR have set up a special mystery screening for us.

How do I get involved?
Look out for the posters or speak to Miss Bennett. If you have been to a previous FILMCLUB screening your name will already be on the guest list!

The Year 7 Myths and Legends Festival, July 2009

Last year, every student in Year 7 performed an abridged version of a Shakespeare play; this year, we chose to explore, through drama, a series of myths and legends from a number of other cultures. Read more...

The myths and legends of the world have been passed on from one generation to another. They reflect the history of communities and the moral values of a society.

Mythology is not merely fiction; it is a reflection upon human life, often offering symbols of a higher knowledge and a better way of being. It is not a coincidence that mythological themes are also used by philosophers and poets. As Cornelius Castoriadis remarks, “there are many beautiful mythologies … inside which, our own life is reflected, and any human life whatever".

During the event, we witnessed a vain girl punished for her boasting, young men slaying beasts, one-eyed monsters, an explanation of the seasons, a prince navigating a labyrinth, and a metaphor about the existence of evil in the world.

We strongly believe that Drama provides students with a unique education: in preparing for the festival, they learnt how to focus, work collaboratively towards a common goal and speak confidently to a large audience – all skills required by employers in the 21st century. Interestingly, this is nothing new; the Ancient Greeks believed “that it was a citizen’s duty to watch a play. It was a kind of work in that it required attention, judgement and patience, all good social virtues.” (Timberlake Wertenbaker).

Many of the students in the festival demonstrated outstanding professionalism and impressed the audience with their ability to learn complex lines and to convey a real sense of characterisation and emotion in their performances. Some of the most impressive performances of the day were given by Will Silver, Jess Parker, James Rigby, Ellie Matthews, Oscar Silburn, Hannah Wedge, Zac Thomas and Lydia Jones. Of course, there are far too many to name and we thank everyone for working so hard and rising to the occasion.

We have all been impressed with the dedication and talent of the actors and look forward to seeing how they progress over the years they are at Uplands.

Art Exhibition 2009 Review

The art exhibition 2009 was an accumulation of 1 – 2 years of hard work by students of GCSE and A-Level. This is the third year that we have had a large exhibition where we have displayed work from all the art and design exam groups and comments from visitors, examiners and students alike have been incredibly positive. We feel it is a true celebration of the students work when you can see all their efforts and achievements out on display.Read more...

GCSE students followed a course where they studied natural forms and multicultural influences in order to create their own artwork. Followed by an exam project on the them of “I, me and mine”.

Applied Art students followed a course starting with a project on sea life where they created artwork for a seafood restaurant, they followed a second project on iconic figures and symbols and then onto an architecture project, where they designed their own buildings. Their exam project was on the theme of “music”

A-Level art and Design is made up of 4 units of work. 2 are studied in AS and 2 are in A2. Students start unit 1 by responding to the theme of “Me and My Environment” students are introduced to new artists and a few new techniques which help them to form their own ideas for following their own path on the theme. Unit 2 is a theme given by the exam board of “opulence” which concluded with a final piece completed under exam conditions. Unit 3 in A2 is a personal enquiry, where students are encouraged to develop as young artists, developing their own art interests in terms of themes and techniques. The last unit is also dictated by the exam board, this year was on the theme of “discord”. This year two thirds of the group have gained places at art colleges to continue their art studies on a foundation course.

A-Level Photography is made up of 4 units. 2 of which are studied I AS and 2 in A2. The majority of the AS coursework is focussed on learning photographic skills both traditional black and white darkroom photography and then in digital photographic manipulation. The students learn these whilst developing ideas on a chosen theme which is chosen after a trip to Brighton. Unit2 was dictated by the exam board on the theme of “Opulence”. A2 students follow a personal theme of enquiry which they choose in order to develop their interests and skills. The last unit is again decided by the exam board, which this year was on “Discord”.

The department would like to congratulate all students who took part in the exhibition and to wish them luck on their creative futures.

Band Night

Uplands’ first ever Band Night took place on 26th February 2009.Read more...

For just over 2 hours the packed audience of fellow students, friends and family watched, listened and danced to a mix of bands from years 10-13, plus links from DJ Reece Woodhams.

Highlights were the weird and wonderful ‘The Curious’ complete with pyjamas and Goth make-up, and the semi-acoustic set from ‘Strawberry Jam’, but it is clear from chatting to the audience that every band was a favourite.

The evening revealed the strength of music-making at the college, and the exam students in particular, as most of the students are taking GCSE music or A-level Music Technology.

As well as the encouraging show of support from fellow students it was great to have students at the school running the sound system. We hope to run a similar event later in the year, but with local semi-professionals as well, in order to raise funds for re-equipping the school’s music studio in readiness for running A2 Music Technology from September.
