U14 Netball

As we stepped out of the car at Rodean School Brighton, the wind nearly knocked us off our feet - we could tell instantly that these were going to be very difficult conditions to play netball in!  And so it proved to be - it was a case of who could best cope with the ferocious wind conditions.  Strong, short passing was needed, movement onto the ball and to make space, and strong rebounding of missed goals to turn over or retain position.  We performed well in all these areas.  Games on the whole were decided by just one or two goals, with shooting, to an extent, a matter of luck - an inopportune gust of wind would send the shot in the opposite direction to the goal post!  Uplands started strongly, winning our first three matches.  We then came up against a very strong Brighton College and lost; but rallied to win the next game - we were sitting in second place in our group.  Unfortunately during that match, Rianna sprained her ankle.  Having already lost Megan earlier in the rounds with the same injury, Uplands had to take to the court for the last match with only six fit players. It was a task too much, and we lost the last match; our opposition Sion went through to the play offs, with Uplands finishing third in our group.  We can only rue what might have happened without the injuries!  The girls played brilliantly in unbelievably difficult playing conditions.

The squad was - Mollie Holder, Verity Game, Megan Crush, Jessie Rosenberg, April Lyons, Lizzie Baxter, Rianna Read and Kirsty Newton.

Girls Football 5th Round National Cup against Warden Park

The U13 Girls football team trained very hard last week for the fifth round of the National Competition knowing it would be a hard game. We went out with a fantastic attitude wanting to win the game.  Unfortunately the wind was against us in the first half meaning Warden Park were able to get two early goals leaving us 2-0 down at half time. We made a few changes at half time and Valentine Pursey was bought more into the game playing midfield; we began to look like more of a threat with constant pressure on Warden Parks defence. The girls battled on for the full 60 minutes, never giving up or putting their heads down.  They worked brilliantly as a team, always encouraging each other. Warden Park had some fantastic players and won the game leaving our girls very disappointed.  However Uplands are very proud of all the girls for getting this far in the National Competition (499 teams entered and they were down to the last 32).

Uplands student wins national writing competition

Between the LInes Creative Writing Awards Ceremony 2011

On Friday the 11th November, seven year 9 students from the gifted and talented English group travelled up to the British Film Institute in London. We went up there for an awards ceremony for a national competition, in which we had to write a piece responding to the films of Ken Loach.

We were really delighted that seven of our group were shortlisted with our poems:  Georgie Hart, Rachel McKernan, Millie Price, Freddie Whipp, Jake Clifton, Kieran Johnson and Marcus Rice. There were two categories 10-13 years old and 14-18 years old. Six of our students were in the 10-13 categories and 1 of our students (Jake Clifton) was shortlisted in the 14-18 year old category- competing against 18 year olds.

We travelled up on the train and arrived at about 10:15 we then had a short walk to the BFI. When we arrived we looked around the foyer and investigated the different stalls browsing for new competitions. At 11 o’clock we went in for an introduction and a Q&A (question and Answer) session with Gerard Kearns. Two of our students got the chance to ask him a question. At this time we watched all of the shortlisted films from one of the other competitions (some were absolutely amazing and very inspiring.) After this Gerard Kearns then read out a couple of the shortlisted poems and this included two of our students, Millie Price and Jake Clifton. We were very privileged and had lunch provided.

After lunch we went to a workshop. There were lots but the three that Uplands took part in were: Animation, Writing film reviews and Script writing.

Georgie, Millie and I all did the writing film reviews workshop and it was very useful and interesting. “I had a brilliant time and can’t wait to have my work published.” Georgie Hart. We are very fortunate and will be having our work published by the Film Club.

The four boys did the Animation workshop in which their work has been published on YouTube enjoyed it immensely. “The workshop was really fun and we created an animation which the public can watch. I enjoyed working with technology and doing creative arts. I used my knowledge of Ken Loach’s Kes to create a funny animation of Kes.”Kieran Johnson

Ms Naylor our teacher attended the script writing workshop. “I went to a superb workshop run by the scriptfactory on how to write screenplays for films. I was so inspired, I have already started writing my own.” Ms Naylor.

After all these we returned to the main hall where the results were waiting. They introduced everything and then announced the runners up. We were a little disappointed not to hear any of our names but then they announced the winner, Georgie Hart.

The day was a great success in which everyone enjoyed.   By Rachel Mckernan

Caught Reading Competition

Vote for Year 7s who’ve been caught reading!

Outer Uniform Reminder for Parents of Students in Years 7-11

As the colder weather descends upon us, we would like to remind parents of our dress code for outer wear.  This is on p.8 of all student planners:

‘All students are required to wear a College sweater and not substitute this with another fashion top or coat. Outer garments should be sensible in style.  Cardigans, padded shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, leather /leather lookand denim jackets are not suitable for school wear.  Scarves should  be black (plain) only.  Boots, trainers and trainer-type shoes are not acceptable. ‘

Please note that we do have an optional school coat which is available from the college uniform website.
In addition to this, we do not permit the following:

  • Body warmers (sleeveless jackets, often puffy);
  • Sports or trainer style tops;
  • Knitwear and sweat shirt material tops - some shops sell tops that look like cardigans or hoodies which have the word ‘Coat’ in them.  For guidance, the College will not consider these outer garments as coats.

As part of College policy, we do confiscate items of clothing which infringe our uniform policy, so please can you support us and your child/ren by ensuring they wear warm outer clothing which is in keeping with our policy. If this is in any way difficult for you for financial reasons, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Pastoral Manager or Head of House as we may be able to help with this. Thank you in anticipation of your support in this matter.

Uplands U15 31 Vs 12Warden Park – U15 County Cup Rugby – This must go down as one of the best performances ever by this year group. In very wet and windy conditions the boys went ahead as early as the 5th minute with a well taken try in the corner. For the next 40 minute Warden Park were on top with some outstanding defence preventing Warden Park Scoring more tries. With 10 minutes to go the game was very close at 10-12 to Warden Park. A number of Uplands errors suggested that the game was slipping away. Using a pause in the game, Ben Kennard delivered an inspirational team talk and the boys combined to play some outstanding simple but direct rugby. Uplands scored a number of converted tries which pushed them over the finishing line and into the Semi-Finals of the County Cup.

U15 rugby team progress to next round of the County Cup

The U15 rugby team maintained their 100% record in the competition with a hard fought victory over Tideway. On their first outing in the new kit kindly supplied by the PTA the boys arrived at Newhaven in confident mood having beaten the same team last year. However early on it looked as though complacency had set in. The team were soon aware that this as going to be no easy game and that a combination of simple rugby and commitment was the key to getting a result. In the end it as the result that mattered and the boys eventually prevailed 12-0 and progressed to the next round where they will host Warden park at Uplands during the week beginning 28th November.

‘Field of Poppies’ for Take Over Day - A Great Success

On Remembrance Day, the 11th of November, Uplands College reception area was transformed into a breathtaking ‘Field of Poppies’.

The field of poppies was the brain child of students in year nine Gifted and Talented English in remembrance of all the men and women who have lost their lives in war and for the competition ‘Take Over Day’ 2011.

‘Take Over Day’ is a chance for students to show their creativity and create an idea and ‘Take Over’ some part of the school in a spectacular way to show creative thinking and responsibility.

Once we had created the idea we had to pitch it to the Principal, Mrs Edmonds, for the idea to become a reality and allow us to continue to plan and let the idea grow.

With permission for the idea to take place, we then went to the Art Department Faculty meeting to explain our idea and ask if the students in the year seven, eight and nine classes could create the poppies for the field. Many of these were made in recognition for lost grandparents or people they know currently fighting in wars today.  Many of these messages written on the poppies touched the hearts of the visitors who visited the field.

Amongst the poppies, we decided to include a range of moving war quotes written about all of the wars.  One of the most important of these was ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae which was a large influence over the idea for the ‘field’.

Many people who visited the school while the ‘field’ was up wrote comments about what they felt. ‘A beautiful array of poppies for a very special occasion,’ said Jill. The school was left with many comments and one of the teachers, Mr Evans, wrote that it was, ‘very beautiful and thought provoking’.

The Head of Art, Mrs Court, said, ‘I think it is a great idea for students to see that other students have organised events within the school, which have given a school area a real lift. The corridor looks fantastic as a result and the combination of the visual poppies and the text makes students see a real link between art and English and I think that is always a positive. ‘

She also said, ‘I think the two students who presented the idea to us in our meeting were very clear, professional and impressive with their ideas. The PowerPoint presentation was also very helpful to present the concept to the classes.

Well done - a successful idea that got everyone involved.’ Ms Court

Written by Isabelle Cleaves

The ‘Poppy Field’ was created by Beth Lanham, Georgia Lambert, Millie Price, Sophie Macleod, Lauren McCall, Isabelle Cleaves, Ella O’Kane, Ella Wallace Browne and Lily Mehr, with the Art Department and all our students in Years 7 to 9.

Presentation Afternoon 2011

On Friday 14th October 2011, Uplands’ lower school students were rewarded for their hard work in our annual Presentation Ceremony. Over 130 awards were presented to those recognised by their teachers as outstanding in some aspect of school life. Certificates were presented by guest of honour and local artist, Dani Humberstone, who gave an inspirational speech on the journey of her own work – from early ideas and to the finished piece. In her speech, she asked students to remember that the secret to success is ‘To find something they are good at, work at being brilliant at it and never let it go.’ Dani was also kind enough to display her work in reception for all to see.

The evening was a fantastic event and it is always such a pleasure to be able to congratulate students on their successes. Amongst the awards presented were those for commitment to learning, as well as sporting excellence and community involvement. Mr Pert’s tutor group, 10IAP, also received a special award for their fantastic achievements in raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Assistant Head, Mr Denholm, said of the afternoon: ‘It is always an absolute pleasure to reward so many of our students and to see so many parents attending to join in the celebration’.

The major award winners this year were:

Percy Fuggle Award (contribution toward care for the environment)

We are pleased to announce that seven of our students have been shortlisted in the Between the Lines writing competition.  Young people were asked to produce writing which was inspired by the films and ideas of the film director, Ken Loach.  Our Year 9 Gifted and Talented English option group took up the challenge, looking at the film ‘Kes’ and also exploring the social and political ideas in his other films.  We have just been told that the following students’ work has been shortlisted and judges are considering their entries now.

  • Georgina Hart
  • Freddie Whipp
  • Kieran Johnson
  • Marcus Rice
  • Rachel McKernan
  • Millie Price
  • Jake Clifton

All of the students have been invited to the awards ceremony on 11th November at the British Film Institute on London’s Southbank, where the final winners will be announced.  The competition’s organisers praised all of the, ‘great entries’ from our students and we are proud of all of them, especially as one entrant stated, ‘This is the most challenging thing I have ever had to write.’  A flyer showing details of the ceremony, which will include exciting industry-related workshops, is available to download below.

'Best Ever' GCSE results

Uplands students have achieved their ‘best ever’ GCSE results with 84% achieving five A*-C grades and 68% achieving five A*-C grades including English and Maths.

Exceptional numbers of students achieved top grades and over 25% of all grades awarded were A/A*. Notable successes included the following students who all achieved an outstanding number of A* grades: Rebecca Seakins (10 A* grades); Hannah Osborne (9 A* grades); Samuel Lanham, Jordan Bullock and Marie Warren all achieved 6A* grades; Alexi Marshall achieved 5A* grades.

We are delighted with the hard work and dedication of all our students and staff and the record number of students that are staying on to continue their studies at A’ Level.

Excellent ‘A’ Level Results at Uplands

Uplands students once again achieved excellent A’ Level results, with 72% of students this year achieving A*-C’s and 44% achieving A*-B in their subjects. In the face of unprecedented competition for university places this year, 85 % of Uplands students have secured their first or second choice university. We believe universities have not only considered actual results but also performance at interview and the personal statement which enables students to demonstrate wider experience and achievement.  This year also saw an improved pass rate of 99%, which is an increase of 4% which represents another successful year and reflects the dedication of both students and staff.

There were also many individual successes, in particular:-

Nick Churcher achieved 3 grade A’s and gained his place at Cambridge University to read Natural Sciences. Evie Armstrong-Clarke, Sam Dethridge and Phoebe McIndoe all achieved A* and 2 A’s.  Sam is off to Durham University to read History and Phoebe gained her place at Warwick to read English Literature.   Lucy Fuggle also achieved 3 grade A’s and is going to Exeter to read English and Spanish.

The Year Seven Shakespeare Festival on 16th July was a great success, with more than 125 students performing six of Shakespeare’s plays: Macbeth, The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice and Much Ado About Nothing.

There were many impressive individual performances, as well as numerous examples of excellent ensemble work. The best performers in each play were presented with trophies and everyone who participated was awarded a medal to keep as a memento of their achievement.

Some outstanding moments included Freya Clarke’s ‘Is this a dagger I see before me?’ speech, which was particularly haunting, while Isabel Jones, Poppy Bobbett and Aurea Zervudachi made the audience laugh out loud with their scenes of comic relief in The Tempest. Imogen Robinson and Abigail Maynard tackled the verbal sparring of Benedick and Beatrice with superb comic facial expressions and Daniel O’Neil’s portrayal of Shylock was tremendously committed.

As well as allowing all students to perform publically during their first year at Uplands, the annual Year 7 Drama Festival enables students to develop their ability to speak in public, to work as a member of a team and to commit to a  project, which has a specific deadline – all key skills for life beyond school.

We would like to thank all of the parents and friends who supported the event as we were delighted that, despite the rain, each play had a full audience. Thank you also to the students who performed: we are very proud of you.

Marketing Eye Competition – Success for Uplands Sixth Form Students

On Thursday 7th July two teams of Sixth Form Business Studies students from Uplands travelled to Uckfield to compete in the final of a business competition organised by Marketing Eye, in which they had invited young people to pitch a business idea.  We were naturally delighted when one of our teams won.  The winning team, featuring Matteo Pontonutti, Mikey Pooley , Will Maltby and Bruce Parker spent Friday with the media and local politicians, discussing their victory with Uckfield FM and BBC Sussex Radio, as well as meeting Charles Hendry.  This is Matteo’s account of the competition and their subsequent fame.

In order to introduce young people to the business world, Marketing Eye gave A’ Level students in East Sussex the opportunity to create their own business as a team. The competition entailed coming up with a business idea and launching all the necessities to begin running a viable company. We were given extreme amounts of freedom to create whatever we saw fit and together, Mikey, Will, Bruce and I, came up with the idea for GraFiX, an online-based photo-manipulation service that offers the opportunity for people to send in their images for editing and enhancements simply, cheaply and quickly, while at the same time achieving the quality above that of any competition. The feedback we received upon winning was that the reason we won is because we were the most advanced group in terms of readiness to start the business, having completed a website and established a target market.

The winning team were given the opportunity to go on Uckfield FM Radio for a 20 minute slot on Friday 8th July , and again on BBC Sussex on Wednesday 13th July, as well as winning a cash prize of £150 and a trophy which will be proudly displayed at the college.

We felt that this was a brilliant opportunity to apply what we had learned in Business lessons to a real world scenario, as well as a chance to improve on our teamwork and time management.

Uplands would like to congratulate the team on their success and to thank their teachers, Mrs Wilkins and Mrs Mason, for their support of all of the teams.

Short Story Success for Sixth Former

We are delighted to announce that Hannah Warley in Year 13 has just won £1000 for her short story which came second in a competition run by the University of Hertfordshire.  This is her account......

During the stressful time of having to write my English course work in March, I was given the opportunity to enter the University of Hertfordshire Creative Writing competition.
After bashing out two thousand words on a short story just before the deadline, I was narrowed down out of two hundred applicants and invited to a development day to meet with the tutors to improve my story.
We spent the day in small feedback groups arguing over the finer points of characterisation, also receiving a tour of the campus.
I was asked to submit a second draft to be judged again by authors Marcus Sedgwick and Emily Mackie, who would make the final decision.
I was again invited back, this time to the awards ceremony, where my piece would be read out by actress Syreeta Kumar (she joins me in the photo below).
Each story was read out and the finalists asked to come up for a picture with the Chairman and collect their certificate, at which point I forgot to stay for my picture and ran off stage.
The winners were called next to collect their prizes; I was not, however, expecting to be one of them. The quality of work that I was up against was outstanding. Somehow, I came in second, winning one thousand pounds to help me fund my next first year at the university.
We were invited to an after party to celebrate where I got to meet to the other contestants, actors and judges. It was like the Oscars, only on a smaller scale and not as glamorous. And in Hertfordshire.

With actress, Syreeta Kumar.

Uplands’ Spelling Stars

By Charlea, Year 9 Journalism student

Four year 7 Uplands students showed off their spelling talent in a national Spelling Bee last week.

The event was part of The Times Spelling Bee and was one of the local heats being held up and down the whole of the UK.

The four Year 7s, Abi Maynard, Jordan Boyle, Tilly Mace and Jennie Brown had to face two terrifying rounds, the Spelling Play Off and then the Quick Fire Challenge.

The students did brilliantly and came fourth in their heat which was against eight other schools.

‘Tense atmosphere’

One of the students, Abi, said: “It was very fun but also scary”

Tilly, said: “When we walked in, it was very serious. A lady at the front was dressed very smartly and there were about 30 other people there. It lasted about three hours but we got goodie bags at the end.”

Miss Bennett, Team manager, said “I am very pleased with our Bees’ performance. They did phenomenally well. I don’t think I could have been quite so amazing in such a tense atmosphere.”

Uplands Students Making The News

By Mollie, Year 9 Journalism student.

This Thursday Uplands Journalism class is taking part in the BBC’s School Report News Day.

The school’s budding journalists are already busy preparing for the annual event.

30 students, aged 13 and 14, will be involved in the day and will write the news stories from the local area along with special reports so they are ready to load to special page on the school website at 2pm.  This page will be linked to the official BBC School Report page.

Zoe, one of the students taking part, said: “I think the day will be great, especially since the public will be able to read our work.”

Miss Bennett, the teacher organising the event said: “I am very excited. The students have been working hard to prepare and I think it is a brilliant opportunity for them to experience what it is like to work in a real news environment.”

School Report Make the news in your school on TV, Radio and Online

Uplands makes the news with help from the BBC

On Thursday 24th March 30 pupils from Uplands Community College will be joining up with around 800 schools across the UK making the news.

The pupils are taking part in BBC News School Report, a BBC project to engage 11-14-year-olds in the news.

Ex-teacher and BBC News presenter, Huw Edwards, is lending his support to the project.

He says: “I'm involved because I want to give young people the chance to make the news themselves, and I want to share the principles of good journalism.”

Over the past few months the journalism students in Year 9 have been working hard, training to be top journalists, carrying out interviews and producing reports.

Miss Bennett, the teacher leading the day, said: “There is a real buzz about the task ahead. It has encouraged students to develop their journalistic skills and is a fantastic opportunity to experience the pressures of a real news room.”

On Thursday at 2pm the students will be broadcasting their news, covering the stories of the day as well as the reports they have been developing over the past few weeks.

You can find more reports from School Reporters on the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport

Important Information on Examination Preparation for Year groups 10-13

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Reference: Important Information on Examination Preparation for Year groups 10-13

In order to help you support your children in preparation for forthcoming examinations, coursework and controlled assessments, we have created a new area on the website which gives details of suggested tasks for all subjects.  In many cases students will already have been given the tasks or details will be on the VLE, but we feel it is important that you are aware of the wide range of tasks which students can and should be doing over the next few crucial months.  This information should be read in conjunction with the Exams timetable section of the website.

While we anticipate that students will be doing these tasks as a natural part of their preparation, please also direct your children to this section in the event of an absence or inclement weather.

We hope this is a valuable addition to our parental information and helps you be clearer about the current demands for your children.  As always we welcome any feedback  which should be for the attention of Ms J Naylor and /or Mrs A Denholm.

Students from East Sussex ‘Make The News’

By Zoe Thatcher

Last week in two schools in East Sussex students took part in a fantastic morning of journalism.

Students from Uplands Community College and William Parker Sports College got a change from regular classes to take part in the ‘Make The News’ day and wrote about real stories which were then published on the East Sussex Learning Platform.

The news reports were in different the categories of politics, celebrities, sports, international, and economy etc.

Their stories were then sent off to the five editors of the class; Hannah Wedge, Ellie Sawyer, Chantel Piper, Rhiannon Chenery and Jade Hudson, and were then finalised officially by the Editor-In-Chief, Zoe Thatcher.

Celebrity Editor, Ellie Sawyer, 13 said: “It was a really great experience!”

Louis Yates, Sports Writer, also 13, said: “It was fun, exciting and different to normal classes”.

The students had a three hour deadline, under pressure, to write and publish all of their stories.

Miss Bennett, teacher of the Journalism class at Uplands Community College said, “I think it’s been a brilliant morning and I’m really impressed with the students’ approach to the task and their news sense.”

Becta ICT Excellence Awards 2010

We are delighted announce that Uplands Community College has achieved 'Highly Commended' in the national Becta ICT Excellence Awards 2010 for the category 'Beyond the School'.

The judges commended the way that Uplands 'works with parents and local community' and were particularly impressed by our use of electronic communication, website, virtual learning environment and online report portal, to engage parents and families with the learning of pupils. They were also very complimentary about our developments in using ICT to enhance pupil learning beyond the classroom.

'As is clear from your position as Highly Commended in the awards, the judges thought that your school had many great strengths. These included:

  • strong sense of purpose for developing learning beyond the classroom, built on sound evidence and focused on pupil learning
  • the range of information gathered about ICT needs is not only noted, but actively used to address pupils' learning needs.'

Andrew Smith, Deputy Head, attended the awards ceremony in Birmingham on 14th October.

Girls' Uniform At Uplands: Skirts - Important Notice

In spite of our communications this year regarding girls’ skirts, there has actually been an increase in the number of girls wearing impractical skirts, which are inappropriate for a business-type environment.  Because of this, we have decided that, from September 2010, we will be introducing our own Uplands regulation skirts, in a choice of styles, which will be available through our online uniform suppliers.  Full details of these will follow shortly.  These will be COMPULSORY and the only skirts that students are allowed to wear.   We will ensure that these are reasonably priced.  Any student wearing skirts which are not regulation skirts will be sent home to change, so please ensure these skirts are ordered well in advance of the start of term.

Girls are, of course, able to choose the option of trousers.  These should not be ‘skinny’ or ‘wide-flared’ in style, nor should they be low-rise (worn on the hips); black jean-type material is not acceptable.

Thank you in anticipation of your support in this matter.  It is unfortunate that we have to impose this and introduce a regulation skirt but it is important that students are dressed appropriately and reflect the ethos and values of the college.

Year 7 Spelling Bees in a hive of activity

The Times Spelling Bee

At the end of last term, four Year 7 students took part in The Times Spelling Bee, a huge event hosted by the newspaper in search of the country’s best spellers.

Matt Kefford reports:

On 26th March, Max Beaton, Millie Filtness, Sophie Macleod and I all took part in the regional finals of The Times Spelling Bee, a national competition which bases itself on the American style of spelling championships.

As we got to the venue, Cineworld in Crawley, we were filled with awe and excitement – it was so big!

We were given our official name badges and entry wristbands and ushered into screening room 3. This was quite scary as the stage was all set with a huge screen behind us, lecterns and microphones, not to mention a camera crew and live audience.

Britney, the competition host, explained all the rules of the competition, introduced our judge and then showed us a video of the competition last year, including the Grand Final in London.

The first competition was the ‘Spelling Play Off’ where we were each given a word to spell correctly. In round 1 we were given easy words. Then round 2 started and immediately someone from Uckfield Community College went out, as did someone from Barrow School. We lost Millie which meant that it was just Sophie and I left.

By Round 5 the teams has really reduced in numbers. It was pretty tough and both Sophie and I were caught out. The two remaining teams, Rodborough School and the Ashcombe Aardvarks made it all the way to round 10, which Britney explained was an amazing achievement and is rarely seen in the competition.

After the Play Off we had a quick break with popcorn and a chance to gear ourselves up for the ‘Quick-Fire Challenge’. Max swapped in to the team and we had a good a round, spelling some tough words correctly under the pressure of time. But we just couldn’t catch the Aardvarks or Rodcombe who racked up a really impressive score to win the heat.

In the end Team Uplands were an impressive third and we were all really proud of our achievement and our nerve.

“They were phenomenal,’ said team coach Miss Bennett. ‘I couldn’t have been prouder of them. There was a lot of pressure under the lights of that stage and I am delighted with the result.”

To celebrate five amazing years in the West End, the producers of Billy Elliot the Musical have launched Billy Youth Theatre, an exciting new initiative providing schools and youth groups around the country with the opportunity to perform their own productions of this internationally award-winning show.

Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall, together with Martin Koch (Musical Supervision and Orchestrations), have adapted their original script and orchestrations to produce a shortened version of the show exclusively for groups staging local productions as part of Billy Youth Theatre.

With an amazing 115 separate productions being staged across the country, Billy Youth Theatre is truly a nationwide event and UPLANDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE are delighted to announce that they will be taking part with a local production planned for 29th – 31st March in the Main Hall.

We look forward to seeing you there!!

The Spanish Exchange

The hugely successful Spanish Exchange to Almenara has been running for four years and continues to help students develop their knowledge of modern languages. Uplands students have already enjoyed the fantastic hospitality of their Spanish Exchange partners during an intensive week of excursions and cultural activities. The Spanish school, I.E.S Almenara, were very supportive and helpful to both staff and students and Uplands Community College is looking forward to hosting them with same care and attention.

The Spanish students are planning to visit London, Bodiam Castle and Royal Tunbridge Wells. They are excited about the trip and are hoping to practice lots of English. We are wishing them a super time in sunny Wadhurst!
